Lady Minto Hospital

(Information from LMHF case Study 2002)

Lady Minto Hospital History

Lady Minto Hospital on Salt Spring Island officially opened in 1914.  Its original building is now the historic Community Centre for Salt Spring Island. The original 6- bed hospital became a reality thanks to the hospitals first physician, Colonel Lionel Beech M.D., who donated the land and secured the cash donations for the building of the hospital from many sources including the local Guild of Sunshine and Lady Mary Caroline Minto .

Since then Lady Minto Hospital has been a beacon for the residents of Salt Spring Island.  We have come to rely on it in emergency situations, for life saving surgery, for the birth of our children and for our day -to- day health care needs.

Through the years the hospital has grown to meet our community needs.  For the past fifteen years, Lady Minto Hospital has received the highest accreditation award from the Canadian Council On Health Services Accreditation recognizing the quality of health care provided at the hospital.

Lady Minto Hospital Today

Much fundraising over the years by the Gulf Island Hospital Foundation and the community have ensured that the hospital has the equipment and facilities  needed by the hospital team to care for patients.  These funds have been used to purchase a wide range of equipment including a Cardiac Monitoring System and Heart Monitors for the Cardiac Program, an Ultrasound machine for the Diagnostic and Treatment Area, and an Anesthetic Machine for the Operating Room.

In addition, the Foundation has provided a portion of the funding for construction of a number of additions to the building itself including a Psychiatric Observation Unit, a water Garden for the patients in Extended Care, a new Emergency Bay entrance, and a Birthing Room Suite for the Maternity Department.

Lady Minto Hospital continues to grow with the needs of the island community and has become a community treasure.
